Moving as a Physician

by Lindsay Merrell

As a Physician, moving can be a way of life, especially in the beginning of your career. The rare Physician may spend their entire career in one state; however most will find that they move 3 times before settling into a 4th place where they may put down roots. The AAMC has a published report that tracked the migratory patterns of physicians early on in their careers. In the early years, most typically Physicians will migrate to where the money is because they receive increased compensation for doing so. As they progress through medical school, residency, and potentially fellowship they incur cost associated with moving that can be excessive. Whether you are a medical student or a fellow with a newborn child, there are many ways to reduce the expense of moving.

1. Classic- Take Care of it Yourself

Packing and organizing your own items will be the most labor intensive route to go; however you will save the most money with this option. Grab some boxes, bubble wrap and get to wrapping those more delicate items. Then have a few friends come over, entice them with their preferred drink choice and task them with assisting you in packing up the U-Haul.

2. Request a Relocation Allowance

Many hospitals that are in less than ideal locations allocate funds to relocate medical professionals. As part of your hiring package, negotiate a relocation allowance as part of your contract. Depending on the employer, the fund may be a full service moving company or being compensated to pack yourself. Don’t walk away from money on the table, even if it is to compensate for your move.

3. Use that Discount Code

As a healthcare professional, typically you qualify for discounts for a wealth of goods and services. Moving services are often an area that is discounted. You may have to utilize a promo code, a specific company, or website; however the amount you will save will be well worth it. Don’t be afraid to ask about a discount, what’s the worst they may say?

4. Utilizing a Pod System

This type of move is partial heavy lifting on your end and partial heavy lifting on the moving company’s end. Sometimes renting a Pod may be tricky as you have to have somewhere the Pod can be located while you fill it (i.e. a driveway). Once it is filled, you don’t have to worry about shipping the container because the company does it for you. Just schedule a pick up date and the company will pick up the Pod, transport it to your new residence, and drop it off for you to unload.

Moving and transitioning to a new employer, may be one state away, across the country, or maybe even overseas. Wherever you are moving as a Physician, you are going to want to plan ahead, save your receipts (tax write-offs), and research your best options to make your move as stress-free as possible.
